Athenas Fall To Bulldogs In SCIAC Season Finale

The women's soccer team, playing their first match in nine days, lost at Redlands 1-0 in the final game of the SCIAC regular season.  This match was originally scheduled for October 24, but was rescheduled due to poor air quality.  Two non-conference games were also cancelled over the weekend which made the Athenas rusty for the first half in this game.  From the start, CMS felt the pressure of the Redlands team and goalkeeper Camila Friedman-Gerlicz (SO, Santa Fe, NM) made several unbelievable saves on breakaways.  In spite of defensive efforts, Redlands capitalized on a ball cleared out around the 18 yard box and rifled a low, hard shot into the back of the net with three minutes remaining in the first half.

In the second half, the Athenas regained rhythm and found themselves with more scoring chances. Several near opportunities bounced around in front of the goal, but the Athenas could not get one in. CMS stepped up both the offensive and defensive efforts in the second half and outshot Redlands 16-12 overall, but could not score the equalizer. The Athenas finished conference play as SCIAC Champions with a 10-2 record (13-5 overall).  Redlands improved to 7-4-1 in conference and 9-5-3 overall.

CMS, the host of the SCIAC Tournament, will play Cal Lutheran in the semifinals on Thursday, November 1 at 5:00 pm on Pritzlaff Field.  For more information on the SCIAC Tournament, click here.
