Athenas Maintain First Place With Win Over Leopards

The Athenas continued their winning streak on Saturday with a 3-0 victory against La Verne.  The team has won 11 straight and is 12-3 overall and 9-0 in SCIAC.

The La Verne Leopards came out ready to battle and maintained a physical presence throughout the entire game.  The Athenas dominated with their skill and speed for much of the first half, scoring their first goal within the first 8 minutes. The goal was scored by Laura Hagen (FR, Bellevue, WA) who dribbled the ball with finesse around several defenders in the box, and slipped the ball past the keeper. Although CMS had several shots that were inches away from going into the goal, the Athenas could not manage to score again until the second half.

The intensity level picked up at the end of the first half, after one of the Leopards was seriously injured, and La Verne seemed to have retaliation in mind.  The second half was brutal, as both teams tried to physically out match each other.  What began as a soccer game seemed to become more of a boxing match, with several cheap shots thrown by the frustrated Leopards.  Finally, another goal scored by Chrysanthia Cheung-Lau (FR, Ontario [pictured]) put the Athenas at ease.  The ball was lofted into the box by Amanda Drasny (JR, San Jose) and La Verne frantically tried to clear it out of their box, but Cheung-Lau was able knock the ball into the back of the net.  Cheung-Lau then scored another goal minutes later when she chipped a beautiful ball over the keeper's head from the top of the box.  In the end, the Athenas proved that they could deal with La Verne's aggression and came out with a 3-0 victory.

CMS returns to action on Wednesday, October 17 with a 4:00 home game against Cal Lutheran.
