CMS Finishes First Round Of SCIAC Play Undefeated

The Athenas' continue their winning streak today with a 2-1 win over their eastern rivals of Redlands. The team's intensity and determination were the key components in their victory over the Bulldogs. Coming into the game with a SCIAC record of 5-0, the Athenas' knew it was going to be a battle until the end. But the players composed themselves and found the opportunities that left the scoreboard 2-1 for the Athenas at the end of 90 minutes. A beautiful finish to the first half of their season as the team is 8-3 overall and riding a seven-game winning streak.

CMS' first goal occurred in the 25th minute of the game after an offensive run by Hillary Tribbs (JR, Lake Bluff, IL) who made a long, wide pass to Kirsten McAfee (FR, Albuquerque, NM) who beat the her defender and laid a beautiful cross to Giselle Gilanto (SO, Duarte [pictured]) who pounded the ball into the back of the net with a mean right footed volley. CMS held the 1-0 lead until the last four minutes of the game when on a quick counter attack initiated by goalie Camilla Friedman-Gerlicz (SO, Santa Fe, NM), the Athenas' forward, Megan Kum (SR, South Pasadena), who received a nice through ball by Ashley Green (JR, Seattle, WA), took on the Redlands' goalie on a break away and finished her opportunity with a strategic chip over the goalie's head into the back of the net. Luckily, she was able to elevate her team to a 2-0, because with 40 seconds left on the clock, the referee made a very controversial hand-ball call in the 18 yard box, which gave a Redlands a chance at getting on the scoreboard. Redlands capitalized on their penalty kick to end the game 2-1. Even though the Athenas' only won by one goal, they dominated the run of the play, and proved themselves as the rightful owners of the best record in SCIAC.

CMS' next game is Wednesday, October 3.  They will travel to Riverside to take on La Sierra University at 5:00.
