Athenas Beat Leos With Quick Overtime Goal
The CMS Athenas beat the La Verne Leopards 2-1 today at home in a hard fought match. The game went to sudden-death overtime after ending in a 1-1 tie and the Athenas scored to win the game in the first three minutes of play. CMS is now 5-3 overall and has an impressive SCIAC record of 3-0.
The Athenas began with a great start dominating the game with shot upon shot. After many missed opportunities, the game finally turned. After battling for the ball in a tight mix, Sarah Blavet (JR, Austin, TX) was able to poke the ball to Megan Kum (SR, South Pasadena, CA) who boomed the ball to the right of the keeper. The first half ended 1-0. CMS came out sloppy and a little disorganized in the beginning of the second half. In this time, the Leopards got a free kick, which was shot to the upper right corner of the goal. This goal seemed to spur the Athenas back into play and they began to hit many shots, which nearly missed or were saved. Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, which was followed by two potential 10 minute halves. Fortunately, CMS came out strong and were able to put away a quick goal. In the third minute of overtime play, Ashley Green (JR, Seattle, WA) passed Laura Hagen (FR, Bellevue, WA [pictured]) the ball, which she took, beat a player, and shot low to the left side of the keeper with her less dominant right foot to lead the Athenas to a victory.
CMS next plays at Cal Lutheran at 11:00 on Saturday, September 22.
