CMS Department of Physical Education and Recreation

The Colleges requires all students to complete three semesters of physical education. Participation on a CMS intercollegiate athletic team will also count towards fulfilling the physical education requirement. All students are expected to complete this requirement during their freshman and sophomore years, except for those excused by the Chair of the Department of Physical Education for medical reasons or because of prior military service.


Registration procedures and deadlines for physical education courses or teams are identical to those of credit courses. Courses offered through other Claremont Colleges may also be elected.

Course description:

Kokikai-ryu Aikido is the creation of Sh??d?? Maruyama (????????????) Sensei, one of the first teachers sent from Japan to spread aikido in the United States. The style is distinguished by its emphasis on focused, conscious relaxation, natural motion, and the principle "Minimum Effort, Maximum Effect" (i.e., that the most effective technique uses minimal effort).  More than just a gym class, this is a martial arts training hall: please try to have the appropriate attitude to receive instruction.

Course Credit:

Enrolled students must attend class regularly (i.e., at least once a week): it usually takes about half a year of dedicated practice to get a taste.

Course Description:

"Pick up" basketball for beginning to advanced players.  Players are split into skill levels and divided for game play.  Minimum required playing time: 1 hour.

Course Credit:

Students can miss three sessions throughout the semester and still receive credit. Those missing more than three sessions without an excuse will not receive credit.

Instruction in the various casting techniques for all types of Fly Fishing.  Arranged opportunities will be offered outside of class, fly tying, basic entomology, also fly fishing in mountain streams. (Extra meetings)

Course Description

Jimmy H. Woo is the founder of Kung Fu San Soo.  Through his teachings we derive the basics of fighting perfected over thousands of years.  It is to his lineage we owe our honor and respect.

In this introductory course, we will cover the basic principles of body movement in self-defense through an offensive perspective.  We will also cover techniques in a series of combative movements not bias size, shape, strength, or gender.

Half-Marathon Training Course

Course Description

This arranged class is a training course for novice runners who wish to extend their endurance to run a half-marathon. Participants should be able to run 2-3 miles comfortably to start this class. While running the culminating 1/2 marathon is not a requirement for credit, participants must show adequate progress made throughout the semester and are required to turn in bi-weekly progress reports. This class will meet periodically, but is based on a Sakai platform where the training calendar and other resources will be located.

Self Defense

Course Description:

Learn to protect yourself and others.  Understand the difference between antisocial aggression and asocial assault--and why each requires a different response.  Practice self-defense strategies and techniques that do not require superior physical strength, conditioning, or athleticism.  Study legal concepts regarding the justifiable use of force.  Spend the vast majority of class time engaged in training, drills, and scenarios to deal with assault scenarios including single assailants, multiple attackers, edged weapons, and firearms.

Course Credit:

Many self-defense techniques cannot be perfected without training partners, poor attendance by one class participant compromises the future safety of other class participants.   Consequently, three or more unexcused absences will result in a failing grade.

Sports Event Management

Course Description

This class will prepare students for managing sporting events, with special emphasis on training students to manage CMS home contests, regional, and national level events. Featured speakers and leaders from the sports event management industry will also present as guest lecturers. Students will work in small groups to design and implement management solutions for hospitality (hotel, official dinners, and on-site), transportation, officiating, scoring, operations and field support, concessions, videotaping, media and web support, medical services, and emergency planning. Students will gain valuable practical work experience in sport event management while developing leadership skills and expertise in a specific area. For a final project, students will present their management models in small groups.

Course Description:

Surfing is for those who already have previous knowledge of the sport and their own equipment.  Students must provide their own means of transportation.  Renting equipment is possible, but not advised.

Course Credit:

Students must complete seven surf sessions (of four hours each) over the course of the semester, two of which must be with the instructor.  The meeting dates and places with the instructor are to be determined.

Course Description:

Learn the fundamental form & principles of Taijiquan—a Chinese martial art—also known for its unique holistic healing aspect. The practice of Taiji (Tai Chi) greatly enhances the balance of our physical, mental, emotion, & spirit. This class will focus on the overall health & wellness of Taiji practice.

In this introductory Taiji class, some Qigong (Chi Gung) & supplementary/auxiliary practices will be incorporated to reinforce a student’s Taiji practice; thus improving the benefits & results. Breathing, movement, meditation, stretching, & other techniques learned & applied will help balance out a student’s daily unnecessary tensions; hence increasing overall performance including school work.

Course Description

A class designed for beginning to intermediate ultimate player. Warm Up, strength work, conditioning as well as skill development are all part of the class. Students spend time in developing a multitude of throwing techniques and several techniques for game tactics. 

Actual playing time ranges from 20 to 35 minutes.
